Fortuny and Japanese Art

My research on Fortuny and Japanese Art has been published by the Journal of Japonisme.

Marià Fortuny (1838-1874), a painter in the forefront of the European avant-garde of the early 1870s, is also considered a key figure in the introduction of japonisme in Spain and Italy. This new research aims to offer a comprehensive analysis of the painter’s links to Japanese art and the phenomenon of japonisme. To this end, the article presents in-depth research in order to describe, as comprehensively as possible, the links between this artist and Japonisme, and the full extent of the influence that Japanese art had on his work. As a result, this paper provides unpublished information about Fortuny’s collection of Japanese art and considers the influence that these pieces had on the Catalan artist’s own work.

The paper is available and with free access for individuals through the Journal’s web page.
